A bit of Begur’s history…

But first, as always, let’s discover a little bit of the history of this village. It dates back to ancient times. It was inhabited by the Iberians, Romans and Moors, and in the 9th century was conquered by Christians. During the Middle Ages Begur became an important fortified town to protect against pirate attacks along the Mediterranean coast.

In the 19th century, “Indianos”, locals from Begur who returned from the Americas (Cuba) with sudden prosperity, played a main role in shaping this village as we know it today, especially in terms of architecture and culture, building majestic buildings and contributing to the development of the village.

Begur Old Town

Visiting the old town of this village is essential to understand its past, which is reflected in every corner. For instance, in this defensive tower built in the 16th century, “Torre de San Ramon”.

Castle of Begur

Another spot that connects us to the past of this village: Castell de Begur. This castle is a medieval fortress built in the 11th century, to protect the village against pirate attacks. Plaça de la Vila

It is the main square of the village, where you can find charming cafés and shops, and witness the everyday life of the locals. Also, from this square you will also see the church “Església de Sant Pere”.

Carmen Amaya viewpoint

Another spot worth stopping by, the viewpoint “Carmen Amaya”, named after the legendary flamenco dancer born in Barcelona, which was connected to Begur as she often visited the village. This viewpoint offers a beautiful panoramic view of the village and the Mediterranean coast.  

Cases “Indians”

As we pointed out at the beginning of the article, many locals from Begur “Indians” played a main role in shaping the village. After they returned from the Americas, they built what we know today as “Casas Indianas”, and there is the “Ruta dels Indians”, a route through the streets of the village to discover these beautiful houses that were built between 1860 and 1887.

“North” Camí de Ronda: Sa Riera – Illa Roja – Platja del Racó – Illa Roja – Sa Riera.

“East” Camí de Ronda: Sa Tuna – Aiguafreda – Sa Tuna.

“South” Camí de Ronda: Aiguablava – Fornells – Platja Fonda – Fornells – Aiguablava.

In Begur you can taste the delicious Catalan cuisine from the Costa Brava, which includes dishes such as “Suquet de peix” (Fish cooked in a traditional Catalan sauce), “Arròs negre” (Black rice) or “Arròs caldós amb llamàntol” (rice cooked in a broth along with pieces of lobster).
