Most beautiful cafe in Barcelona: Can Deu

Date:

The most beautiful cafe in Barcelona in our opinion, but it is not probably among the most popular ones. It is actually part of a community center called “Can Deu”. It is a modernist building which has a century of history, and the story behind it is directly linked to its name… Do you want to know why this is such a special place? Read on to find out…

The building: a beautiful community center in les Corts

Can Deu is a neo-gothic building from 1897. It is located in Plaça Concòrdia, in Les Corts, and it has been (and still is) one of the icons of this neighborhood. Beyond an architectural treasure, Can Deu has been a cultural, social and artistic meeting point over the years. And it still is today, after more than a century. In 1984, Les Corts district acquired the house and turned it into public facilities, Can Deu community center.

The family Can Deu

Here is an interesting fact: the name of the building is directly related to the people who inhabited it from 1897 to 1981. They were well known, familia Deu. They founded the company José Deu y Compañía, specialized in the commercialization and distribution of wines and aniseed.

And Can Deu’s beautiful coffee shop

We made the confession in the first lines of this post: this is a really particular coffee shop (and spot) in the city that we really love. Not just a common coffee shop, but a modernist and historic spot turned into a coffee shop but preserving its essence: white marble tables, large windows through which the light gets in (and specially through the red stained glass).

But if you prefer delicious hot chocolate instead of coffee, then you might want to head out to the most iconic street for chocolate lovers, Carrer Petritxol, in the Gothic quarter or Granja Viader.
