Crema catalana
Definitely the most famous Catalan dessert: crema catalana. If you go to have lunch at a traditional restaurant in a “masia”, the traditional Catalan construction for restaurants, you will probably find crema catalana among the option desserts in the menu. And even in many restaurants in the city offering “menú del dia”, crema catalana is also a popular option to end a traditional and delicious Catalan meal.
Mel i mató
If we just said that crema catalana is the most famous Catalan dessert, the truth is that it has a really strong competitor: mel i mató. This dessert which combines fresh cheese and honey, is also a really popular dessert in Catalonia. Especially when you go to have lunch at traditional Catalan restaurants in villages in the mountains, and even in local restaurants in Barcelona.
Pijama
Quite a curious name right? This dessert was a traditional Catalan dessert that was prepared during “festes majors” (typical Catalan local festivals) and today is still one of the protagonists in many menus! The best part is that it is so easy to prepare: you just need “flam”, peaches and pineapples in syrup, ice-cream and some whipped cream. Et voilà! A simple and delicious Catalan dessert.
Coca
You won’t find this option that often on the menus of restaurants. But the truth is that if you are invited to have lunch at your family’s or friend’s house… You might want to bring a “coca” to end the meal with this sweet cake. Coca is probably one of the most traditional kind of cakes in Catalonia. There are many types of coca: de llardons, de forner, de Llavaneres… And even for special festivities such as Sant Joan, this coca has its own name, “Coca de Sant Joan”, usually filled with cream and dried fruits.
