Where does the tradition of Thanksgiving come from?

Even though in Barcelona there is no tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving (probably known here as the most iconic celebration in the US), there are some specific bars and restaurants launching special dinners and parties aimed at Americans living in Barcelona. But before making the list of those places, let’s start from the beginning: Where does this tradition come from?

This celebration is held the 4th Thursday of November, and it has its origins back to 1621. When the English settlers celebrated along with the Native American people the success of the first harvest for three days. The colons had arrived the previous year to the colony of Plymouth, part of today’s Massachusetts state, but only half of them survived the winter. So next year’s successful harvest was celebrated with a meal in which they shared turkey, pumpkins and dried fruit with the Native American people. A celebration that today it is known as Thanksgiving.
