While walking Passeig de Gràcia street, you can probably catch a glimpse of La Pedrera from afar. But how is La Pedrera from the inside? Here we share a sneak peak of this building from the inside and a bit of the history hidden behind its walls.
Who build La Pedrera?
La Pedrera was built in 1905 by the architect Antoni Gaudí, an architecture icon in Barcelona nowadays. He is known for creating other emblematic buildings in this city like La Sagrada Família, Park Güell or Casa Batlló. La Pedrera also belongs to the modernist recognized works created by Gaudí, and it is one of the most famous buildings in the city.
For whom was built La Pedrera?
La Pedrera was built in 1905 by Antoni Gaudí as a commissioned work ordered by the couple Pere Milà and Roger Segimon. By that time, Passeig de Gràcia was one of the most famous and prestigious streets in the city, and Pere and Roser decided to live in the main floor, leaving the rest of the floors for rent.
For this reason, this building is known as La Pedrera but also as Casa Milà, the surname of Pere Milà.
Who lives in La Pedrera building today?
La Pedrera was officially declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1984. The building was restored and opened to the public as a cultural institute in 1994. Since then, lots of tourists have been able to visit La Pedrera from the inside.
But, did you know that there are still old neighbours living in the building? La Pedrera is still home for people like Carmen Burgos who lives in the second floor, or the writer Ana Viladomiu. Also there are a couple apartments rented to diverse companies, and the Catalunya-Pedrera Foundation it is also based in this building.
La Pedrera from the inside
This building is beautiful from the outside. But how about La Pedrera from the inside? It is a building in the center of which are two patios. Once you are inside, look up to enjoy this particular view of the building (and also take this iconic picture: La Pedrera rounding up the sky).
As you go up discovering the secrets of the building, you will be able to explore the different spots which include the main floor, and then four floors, the attic and a rooftop. These images can give you an idea of what you will find inside the building:
What are the figures on top of la Pedrera?
When we finally arrive to the top of the building, we can get one of the most beautiful views of the city. Once there pay attention to the figures distributed on this space, because they are the ones who give the name to the rooftop as “The garden of the warriors”. These figures are mythological warriors, in charge of protecting the city from the heights ;-)
