The modernist district: Eixample district

Date:

Following with our “district picture” of Barcelona, today it is time for the most iconic one: the Eixample district. It is one of the most popular districts in the city, since it is the one located in the city center, but how much do you know about this area? Let’s find out…

Eixample district today

Most iconic monuments

Why do we call Eixample the iconic district? Because it has the most iconic monuments in the city: La Pedrera, Casa Batlló. Casa Amatller, Sagrada Família…

The most famous avenue: Passeig de Gràcia

It has some of the most famous avenues and streets, such as Passeig de Gràcia, where many luxury brands and boutiques are located.

The most populous district in Barcelona

Eixample district is the most populous area in the city, specifically it has more than 260.000 inhabitants.

What is it like to live in Eixample?

Living right in the city center of Barcelona

This one is quite clear: you are living right in the center of the city. So you don’t need to take the metro or bus to get to the most centric area in the city (as it would happen if you lived in neighborhoods such as la Barceloneta or les Corts) because you are just there.

All services are close

As a result, this area has all the services you need so close, such as supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. For both daily tasks or socializing, these offer a wide range of places and activities.

Frenetic area in Barcelona

But it couldn’t all be positive: a centric area means a lot of activity. So the Eixample district is a frenetic area: heavy traffic, noises, a combination of people going to work with many groups of tourists visiting the area, etc. So it is not a district as quiet as neighborhoods such as Gràcia (which has these narrow streets that reminds us more of a village).

Rent is high

And following with the negative part: rent is high in the Eixample district. But to be honest, rent is high in most areas of Barcelona. But yes, specially in this centric district in the city.
