Public transport in Barcelona

Date:

What’s the best public transport in Barcelona to explore the city? Bus or subway? What about walking or biking? If you are wondering the best way to explore the city in terms of transport, here we share the main of them:

Walking

Probably one of the best “transports” to explore the center of the city. You can walk La Rambla, Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, La Pedrera. Besides visiting the main spots and monuments, you will get the special vibes of the city.

And if you want to visit other beautiful spots like Ciutadella, La Sagrada Familia or Montjuic which are a little far from the city center, you can take the metro and arrive there easily.

Probably the most used public transport in Barcelona: Metro

Barcelona has a modern and efficient metro system. These are the currently metro lines active all over the city:

At the official site you you will find additional information regarding incidences or temporary modified schedules. Here we share some of the main ones to arrive to must-see spots:

  • Sagrada Família: Sagrada Familia stop L2 or L5 stops (purple or blue lines)
  • Parc Guell: Lesseps L3 (green line)
  • Parc de la Ciutadella: Ciutadella stop L4 (yellow line).
  • Barceloneta: Barceloneta stop L4 (yellow line).
  • La Pedrera: Passeig de Gràcia stop L2, L3 or L4 stops (purple, green or yellow lines).

And an overview of the pretty large metro system Barcelona has (clic on the image to expand it):

You will hear constantly through the metro speakers “Please take care of your belongings (…)” Thefts always take advantage when they find someone distracted, specially in the metro. So watch out and protect your belongings during your metro rides and also while you wait the metro to arrive. That is the best way to avoid being robbed.

An alternative to metro: Bus

Even though the metro is a good option to get to the diverse main spots of the city, the bus is also a good option. If you prefer to enjoy the views while traveling, instead of traveling underground, you can choose this form of transport.

The bus system is also pretty large and it covers pretty much all the spots of the city. Here are the lines so that you get a general idea, and to check details and schedules clic here.

You can download a bus map at the official website.

Sustainable public transport in Barcelona: Bicing

If you prefer to discover the city by bike, it is also possible! Barcelona has a pretty strong bicycle lane system all over the city. For the permanent residents in Barcelona there is the special bicing system, but tourists can rent a bike and use the bicing system. Specially during spring, summer and early autumn, while exploring the city by bike you can perfectly feel the vibrant rhythm of Barcelona. A pretty great experience, getting to ride among the natives and diving deeply into the culture and urban lifestyle.

Taxi

Taxi is another way of transport in the city of Barcelona, but probably the expensive one. We recommend you to discover the city by walking, metro, bus or bicycle, and take the taxi just for short rides: if you go out at night and need a ride back to your hotel or to get to the city after landing in the airport of Barcelona (even though you have cheaper options to go from the airport to the city center.

Taxi-Barcelona

No matter what transport you choose, we are pretty sure you will enjoy the beautiful spots that make this city so special.
