La Sagrada Familia, an icon of the city
The expiatory church of La Sagrada Familia was begun in 1882 from a project by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. At the end of 1883 the architect Antoni Gaudí carried on the works until his death in 1926. Since then diverse architects have continued the works.
As an expiatory church, La Sagrada Família has been entirely built thanks to donations from the outset. In words of the architect Antoni Gaudí: “The expiatory church of La Sagrada Família is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people”.
This building was built in the centre of Barcelona, and nowadays it is one of the most universal signs of identity of the city. Millions of tourists visit the monument every year, and its architectural and religious content is still the focus of many studies. The building could be finished during the first third of the 21st century.
