Where is the Roman aqueduct in Barcelona located?
The remains of the Roman aqueduct are really close to the Barcelona Cathedral. So if you are visiting the Gothic quarter to dive into Barcelona’s history, we highly recommend walking to the square “Vuit de Maig” where this aqueduct is located.
How did they find this Roman aqueduct?
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the aqueduct in Barcelona is believed to date back to the 1st century and was uncovered in 1988. After the demolition of a house on Duran i Bas street, they uncovered four arches and their corresponding pillars. A discovery that surprised everyone!
The history of the Roman aqueduct in Barcelona
Just like in every Roman colony, they constructed the aqueduct to provide water to the inhabitants. The Romans made it a priority to find a source of drinkable water when establishing a colony. Thus, this aqueduct carried water from the Besòs River to the city, in a structure of 13 kilometers, from Montcada to Barcino.
How long was it in use?
According to historical references, around the 9th – 10th century is when the aqueduct ceased to function. The construction of the Rec Comtal began, and this change was due to significant organizational and social changes. Because with the creation of the Rec Comtal, water was no longer considered as a consumable resource but rather as a wealth-generating element. (Which we’ll explain in another article ;)).
