What are the best cities to live in Spain for Americans? We made a list of city-brothers from another mother to answer that question (or a list of city-sisters from another mister if you prefer ;-)). American cities which find its Spanish soulmate.
San Francisco – Barcelona
Both are open cities with lots of cultural and disruptive movements going on. They have a unique atmosphere which naturally offers a warm welcome to any visitor exploring the city. Not to mention the connection of these cities to the sea. Modernity and open-mindedness are implied in the nature of both. Definitely one of the best places to live in Spain for Americans (a totally unexpected statement coming from us, right? ;-)). Living in Barcelona as an American also means being able to lean on a beautiful expat community. The perks of living in a cosmopolitan city, as it happens in San Francisco.
San Diego – Bilbao
Oh mama, I wanna go surfing… And if you are lucky enough to be in one of these cities, we got good news: you will have the chance to surf for hours and hours. This is a common feature for these two cities that we decided to match as city-brothers from another mother. Also in historical terms, San Diego holds a strong Spanish heritage.
San Diego and Bilbao have a privileged location, specially for those who love feeling how close they actually are to nature: both have beautiful front seas and at the same time are surrounded by a charming mountain background. Also beautiful architecture and nice cafes (and we love nice cafes).
Washington DC – Madrid
The nerve center of the country, where political administrations and official institutions are based. Elegant buildings and wide avenues that add that majestic feeling that almost every country’s capital has. Both are cosmopolitan cities hosting people from around the world. Fancy places, huge monuments and History everywhere. And that is what probably helps to build an atmosphere from which emanates that feeling of power. Living in Madrid as an American might remind you of DC (on a smaller scale).
Los Ángeles – Marbella
Both glamorous cities. You can get that glam vibe either walking through Los Angeles or Marbella streets. Fancy restaurants and luxury hotels take the stage in these two cities. They also share a sea front location and invite to join a high standard of living for those living there and also Summer visitors. Classy, and classic. Marbella might be one of the best places to live in Spain for Americans, in case they love that Los Ángeles’ vibe (but again, on a smaller scale)
Many Americans end up choosing a pretty different place to live: not a city by a quiet little town which guarantees a higher quality of life (and probably a cheaper rent).
What do you think of this kinship list we wrote? Would you switch any of these cities? Have you lived or still live in one of them? We’ll be happy to know your opinion, or adding some other city-brothers to the list ;-)
Which are the best places to live in Spain for Americans? We leave the question still open…
