“Campanades” at Font Màgica de Montjuic for New Year’s Eve in Barcelona

Here in Spain we have a very particular and special way of welcoming the new year. We celebrate what we call “Las Campanadas”. And what does this word mean exactly?

Las Campanadas is a popular ritual we follow for new year’s eve along with our family or friends, and it consists of eating pieces of grape during the last 36 seconds of the year, one every three seconds. Reunited all together, we eat them guided by the sound of the clock (normally the mythical huge clock placed at the popular square Plaza del Sol in Madrid or the one in La Font de Montjuic in Barcelona).

After this, we stand up with our glasses full of cava (typical beverage for these occasions), and share our best wishes with everyone. CHEERS!

If you want to experience this special ritual for Barcelona nye, you have the opportunity at La Font Màgica de Montjuic! Almost 70.000 people are reunited there in front of this Fountain, to say bye to the year that ends and to welcome in the new year. Also you will enjoy a show which combines music, magic lights from the fountain and a final fireworks show.
