Typical Catalan Christmas food

Date:

Food is one of our favorite topics to discuss, specially when it comes to traditional and delicious traditional food from a specific region. So we mixed our food and Christmas passions and we got this article as a result :-P

Ready to find out the typical Catalan Christmas food? Here are some of the most served dishes in the region during the Christmas Holiday:

Catalan Christmas food: Main courses

Escudella i carn d’olla

“Escudella” is how it is called the traditional Catalan soup. And we love it! We actually dedicated an article to this delicious soup, Escudella (soup lovers might understand :-P).  This soup is also traditionally served at Christmas, so our love for soup made us place this dish in the first place of this Catalan Christmas food list.  “Galets” is how it is called the pasta in this soup, and “carn d’olla” is a meatball which also plays a leading role in this traditional dish.

Sarsuela de peix i marisc

Sometimes a picture is worth a 1.000 words. And this is one of those times. Can we add something else to this picture? Okay, let’s try: sarsuela de peix is a combination of fish (usually monkfish), prawns, mussels, clams… with a sauce made out of onions and tomatoes mainly (“sofregit” or “ sofrito”).

Rostit de pollastre

And more Catalan Christmas food: Rostit de pollastre. It is mainly roasted chicken cooked with a special sauce which usually includes plums and pine nuts. A combination of sweet and salad savours that make it a delicious classic Catalan Christmas dish.

Canelons

If we talk about typical Catalan Christmas food, that conversation will always include them: Canelons! They are definitely one of our favorite dishes (if not the favorite). And they get all the attention on this special day: 26 December, Sant Esteve. This is a popular festivity celebrated in Catalonia, after Christmas Day, and the typical food eaten on this date is “Canelons”. We will try to describe it: they are pasta rolls filled with meat (or spinachs, mushroom, etc.) and covered with this traditional sauce called “bechamel”. In three words: de-li-cious.

Catalan Christmas Desserts

And what about desserts? Besides these typical Christmas main courses, there are some yummy Catalan Christmas desserts that you can’t miss either:

Neules

These long and crunchy sweet treats are one of the most popular when it comes to typical Catalan Christmas desserts. Neules usually have their space in many Christmas talk tables.

Torrons

This dessert might sound more familiar to you, “torrons”. Nougats are definitely one of the most popular Christmas desserts in Catalonia, but also in Spain. “Turrons d’Agramunt” is one of the most famous traditional brands of nougats, and you can find them in Barcelona.

Tronc de Nadal

This is a typical cake in the form of a log… Does this description ring a bell? It probably does, since this special cake is a sweet tribute to the most magic log on Earth: Tió de Nadal.
