Les tres bessones, as we know them in Catalonia
We are so glad to share these news: The triplets (or Les tres bessones / Las tres mellizas as we know them) are back! These Catalan cartoons were created by a Catalan illustrator Roser Capdevila and they left a mark on many generations.
We definitely consider these three little girls (Anna, Teresa and Helena) a valuable tool to spread the most popular tales. But they have achieved more than that: many Catalan kids grew up while entering the imaginarium of Les tres bessones which means not only discovering short stories like “La princesa i el pèsol” or “Les set cabretes” but learning rich vocabulary and the most popular set phrases.
Beyond popular tales, they also approach current issues and best practices applied to everyday situations. They also highlight universal values such as solidarity or friendship, and bring back episodes from History which turn into simple (but valuable) history lessons for the little ones. Les tres bessones are definitely one of the most iconic Catalan cartoons for so many reasons (if not the most iconic).
We got lucky to have them back!
Their return was announced recently, making us realize how time has gone by not just for us: The triplets have grown up as well. Barcelonan producer Brutal Media is bringing them back on the screen twenty years later. Now as teenagers they will be involving themselves in the same adventures, or rather, the boring witch will keep sending them to live new adventures as a “punishment”.
As grown-up adults which consider themselves forever-a-child, we can’t wait to see how this sequel is going to look like. Meanwhile you can still follow their old adventures on Les tres bessones Youtube channel.
Cartoons to learn Catalan
Using the triplets’ return as an excuse, we decided to make a list of other iconic Catalan cartoons (created by Catalan illustrators or translated to Catalan):
From 2 years old:
Teo
Teo is also another iconic character among Catalan cartoons. It was created by three Catalan illustrators based in Barcelona. This kids show (and also books) describe Teo’s everyday situations: Teo goes on a hike, Teo goes to the supermarket, Teo in the city…
Mic
It is is a puppet show aimed at the little ones. Mic and their friends (Cincsegons, Cargol and Mosca) are always ready to have fun.
You can watch this puppet show on the Super3 platform anytime.
Teletubbies
Who hasn’t heard about these international cartoons? They were translated to Catalan as well, with the opening “És l’hora dels Teletubbies!” to let the children know the show was on and they were ready to delight them with their adventures taking place on that huge green scenery.
From 4-5 years old:
Doraemon
These Japanese cartoons were (and still are) one of the most famous for Catalan kids. The magic adventures of Doraemon and Novita were also translated to Catalan, leaving a mark on many generations.
Bob el Manetes
The Catalan version of Bob the builder is Bob el Manetes in Catalonia. There is no thing that Bob is not able to fix. An attitude which reflects the aim of helping others and the importance of perseverance.
Inspector Gadget
We love the tune of this kids show. You probably know these cartoons since it is a coproduction between France, Canada and the United States. We included it anyway on the list to let you know that you can follow the adventures of this distracted but adorable detective in Catalan language as well.
Where to watch Catalan cartoons online
You can easily watch these cartoons in Catalan or Spanish on their dedicated youtube channels (for example, Les tres bessones or Teo).
In case you want to discover other Catalan cartoons that your little children might enjoy, we suggest you to take a look at the TV3 platform which offers many Catalan cartoons from the kids channel Super3 for streaming: https://www.ccma.cat/tv3/super3/videos/
