Pals, a beautiful medieval town

Date:

Depending on the language you use, the word ‘pals’ might mean ‘friends’ or… one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Catalonia: Pals! And, guess what: we are about to write a new article based on the second meaning ;)

So in case you are thinking of possible destinations for a day trip or weekend trip to Costa Brava, consider visiting the beautiful town of Pals! And to make the most of your trip, here is a list of things to do in Pals when visiting the old town.

Plaça Major

Located at the entrance of the town, Plaça Major (the main square) is one of the first stops. It is a wide open square where the town hall is located and, with a couple of bars and terraces to have some drinks if you feel like it.

Carrer Major

And after you cross the Plaça Major you will enter a beautiful maze of streets made out of stone. Right after you start exploring you will bump into the main street called “Carrer Major”. And you will probably want to take a picture, because isn’t it the perfect postcard composition?

Torre de les Hores

As you walk the streets of Pals, at some point you will see a tower in the distance. It is called “Torre de les Hores”. It is located in the highest part of the old town. This is the master tower of what once was the castle of Pals, which dates back to the IX century. During the 15th century, the castle suffered serious damage, and the “Torre de les Hores” was the only part that survived over time.

And these are some of the views from the “Torre de les Hores”:

Mirador de Josep Pla

And pretty close to the “Torre de les Hores”, in the final stop, a beautiful lookout named “Mirador de Josep Pla”, in honor to one of the most well-known Catalan writer who was so close to this land, the Empordà.

Visit some local shops

This is something that we especially liked: the perfect balance between a quiet and historical town, and some genuine shops with artisanal artwork such as ceramics, wicker baskets, products from the area, delicious homemade ice-cream… In our opinion, a combination that definitely makes Pals a colorful and vivid medieval town worth visiting!

Despite having made this “things to do in Pals” list, we highly recommend you to just walk and wander the streets, to find these beautiful intimate postcards along the way:

Beyond Pals: visit the medieval towns nearby

If you are spending a couple of days in the area, we highly recommend you to visit other wonderful medieval towns nearby, such as Peratallada or Begur. Also, especially in the summer, you can’t miss some of the most beautiful beaches in Begur, which are actually some of the best beaches in the country!

Have you ever visited the old town of Pals? How was the experience of time travel through the streets of this beautiful medieval town? Let us know in the comments below!
